Effect Of Parents Divorce On Children

Divorce is something that is common these days. Divorce is both the partners get separated from each other. The reason may either they don’t love each other anymore or there may be adjustment and compatibility issues between each other. Differences may vary. The only thing is they just want to live separately.

When two parents get separated, it is the children who suffer. They feel that their life has gone upside down. Divorce is a very sensitive issue for the children but if both parents take care of the needs, feelings, and emotions of the children while taking divorce, it is possible for a child to cope with it easily.

The researches have shown that in the US the daughters of divorced parents have a 60% high divorce rate and sons have a 35% rate.

Short term effects

When both the parents behave immaturely at the time of divorce without taking care of their children, they may have the following short term effects on them:

Anxiety

Children of parents who are getting divorced are more tense, nervous, and anxious. Younger children are more prone to these things as they are more dependent on their parents for their needs and emotions. The anxious the child more is the lack of concentration and attention in studies and there may be a lack of interest in normal activities also. There is a lack of interest in those activities also in which they were once interested.

Stress

Children, who are under the pressure of their parents’ divorce, may consider themselves as the reason for their parent’s divorce and can try their level best to bring them together. This can bring the child in a lot of pressure and stress which can bring their mind to think negatively and they can get nightmares also. The stressors for a child when divorce is taking place are changing the school, moving to the new home, living with a single parent as a single parent is more frustrated. Again, financial crises and hardships are also much common when a divorce takes place.

Mood changes

Children who are at a very young age may suffer from mood swings and irritability even when they interact with the people who are familiar with them. Some children may also withdraw themselves from the people around them; they may stop talking to the people. They will become quiet and prefer to be alone.

Sadness

The child becomes sad in his heart and mind. He or she feels helpless to deal with the divorce of parents. A child may go into depression if he or she is sad for a longer period of time.

Children of divorced parents may feel hopeless and distressed. They may feel delusional. And when they are looked after by a single parent only, their delusions and depression may increase.

Long term effects

Things can get more complicated after the divorce and there are some long term effects of it. These may be:

Behavioural and social

One of the long term effects of divorce is that the child is at a higher risk that he or she will develop violent and antisocial behavior. He/she may have some temper issues also and may start insulting people without thinking about them. This kind of behavior may result in a criminal mindset in the children. Especially in adolescents. Extreme cases of this may make the child misfit in society.

Troubling relationships

When children see fail in their parent’s marriage. They see that their parents fail in love and harmony in their marriage. A child may develop a thinking that he/she will also have the same issues as their parents in the future. They may also develop trust issues in their further relationships and may find it difficult to resolve their issues.

Substance abuse

Children are more prone to drug and substance abuse. They release their anxiety and frustration with the means of drugs and substance abuse. There are cases when a child is with a single parent he or she misses the love and care they need. This may lead to low well being in the child.

Depression

The feeling of continuous sadness may get the child to lifelong depression. Depression is a mental health issue and children who face the divorce of their parents are more prone to depression, as per the studies. And when they are in depression they are more socially withdrawn.

Divorce can be bitter for you as well for your children. But if you think that there is no other option other then opting for divorce go for it. But make sure that you are not hindering the growth and mental status of the child, as they are having a long way to go.
